A day of firsts

Today two new girls arrived from the U. K . Both teachers newly qualified I think, don't know much about them yet but they are lovely and I am sure we will get along just fine. They are teaching in the morning then coming to the orphanage in the afternoon. So that was my first first , meeting the girls.

My second first was sitting on the back of Anita's scooter to get to the Vishaal Mall, an interesting experience but it's not far so wasn't too hairy, but believe it or not in amongst this chaos a parking attendant appeared and made us move !

Then it was into the very (trendy for Madurai standards ) Vishaal Mall, which was great so ,any cheap but lovely clothes , I bought a few outfits which you will no doubt see as time goes on.

I then got myself cleaned up and got into an auto at 6pm. to meet some girls in town for a meal as one is leaving.

First time wearing one of my many outfits.though this one is going to the tailors again as it s still a bit wide
Then it was a first to eat in a rooftop restaurant .very tasty it was too, main course £1.30 , nan 40p. And a soda 40p. Unbelievable !!!!

The View from the restaurant at the top of the Madurai Residency.

My final first of the day, was to negotiate a price on an auto and give the directions back home .
The first guy wanted R 130 and would not shift so walked on and I got one for a much more sensible R 100.
Anita said I shouldn't stay out much after 9 as some men become a bit forward . This driver the only chatty driver I have had and wanted to try his French words out on me . I also gave him exactly the right directions in the dark but am glad to be back safe and sound .
The city at night by the way is as busy as it is during the day only they have lights on.
Tomorrow I am meeting Marion the German girl to go I to town and see the Sree  Meenakshi temple which looks interesting and that's a first as well.

In the meantime bed is calling , it has been along very hot day so that's all for now folks.

  1. Ok.. first ... stop telling us how your clothes keep needing to be taken in ... and second ... stop taking chances with the auto drivers who of course will fancy you and third... there is no third! Glad to hear you do get some time off !! More blogs please. x

  2. It sounds as if you are getting to know the place quite well. I like the rooftop restaurant ; do they do gin and tonic?
