So here goes again.
After a lovely breakfast of paw paw and lemon we left for the orphanage in our auto driven by Kumar
So off to
Where I was trundled into a very colonial looking room with a very smart Indian called Mr Dodd who is the top man. He welcomed me and hoped I would enjoy my time with them . Then it was off to see the babies .
Life in the orphanage is hectic at times noisy but it is generally clean , although due to shortage of cot sheets the babies are often left lying in sick until someone notices or has the time to change the ( dish towels ) that the children s heads are lying on .
There are 3 rooms , the wee tiny tots premature - 3 months 3 months - 1 yr then 1 yr to pre school.
There are a number of volunteers and varying ages . And all seem friendly people.
Then it was back to my house for lunch which I have to sort out myself which maybe a bit of a challenge though I did try a couple of wee lentil patti things which were tasty so that might do as meats cheeses and hams are a no no.
The trip to the shops were another challenge again as you literally risk life and limb trying to get anywhere, but at least I know how to get there now.Past a really stinky bit like this. I distinctly remember saying to Phil when we were passing a similar area in Egypt on a bus that I was so glad that we were just passing through , and here am I living it .... Well almost it's just round the corner , I am in quite a nice street actually, the. Indian equivelant of leafy suburbia !!!!!
I had asked ANita to take me to show me the tailor shops , they are in the town centre right by the very famous almost but not quite made it world heritage Sri Meenakshi Temple
Just opposite there there are a series of vaults and it's in there that there are hunners and hunners of wee tailor stalls. Anita obviously has a deal with one guy as I was led straight there , was bustled about measured every which way with plenty of head shakes and shouts and bobs your uncle I am having 5 items made , 2 tops 2 three quarter trousers and one long pair . The bill ... £22 so I hope they do the job. My next panic is that I will have to venture into the city by myself to pick them up. There are no road names no street maps so it will be landmarks only as directions, am thinking I might get wee Kumar to take me and wait for me.
Was quite tired today actually so after a lovely meal from the family , several small tasters of different Tamil dishes I said my good nights and came upstairs to get some quiet time.
Next time more about the Orphanage and any other interesting happenings from Madurai.
